In 1870, Bishop Henry Pierce had a dream about Arkansas and the Indian Territory. Three years later, in 1880, he met with the Marianna and Good Shepherd congregations in Forrest City. And, three years after that, the first service of St. Andrew's was held at the Court House on July 6,1883. Caleb Bruce was called to be the Rector, and worked in connection with The Church of Good Shepherd. In that same month, James Tappan and John Horner donated the land for a new church. The Rev. Bruce designed the first church and the feast of St. Andrew was celebrated on the Feast of All Saints on November 1, 1886. He continued to serve until his death in 1895.

In 1910, The Rev. Cornelius Burke became Rector. Under his leadership the Vestry voted to build a new church. In November 1920, Bishop James Winchester laid the cornerstone. The new Bishop drew up a plan in the style of Spanish missions. On January 12, 1921, the church was built of reinforced cement and interlocking ties. The altar was made from Arkansas marble as was the baptismal font. It was over twenty years later, in 1944, that Bishop Bland Mitchell consecrated the building.  The old frame building served as the first parish house.

One interesting fact – Mr. Vince Harrington, owner of Harrington's Drug Store, and a staunch Presbyterian, was a member of the first Vestry!

Caring for Animals

Reaching out to those in need is a crucial part of how we make sense of our faith. Compassion and loving-kindness to all of God's creation is a sign of gratitude for the compassion and loving-kindness shown to each and every one of us.

Currently, Marianna's dogs face an uncertain future, The Marianna Dog Pound gives them a caring environment in which to live, and also provides a visible presence in the community for families considering the adoption of a pet.

We invite you to join in our effort through your financial and volunteer support of the Marianna Dog Pound!
